WA3 has more genuinely good places for lunch than it gets credit for. Three worth trying, in Culcheth and Padgate, covering proper sandwiches, chef-crafted options at a train station, and bagels good enough to sell out most weekends.

Rated 4.5 out of 5 locally, and it's the coffee people mention first, but the food holds its own. The Italian Chicken Wrap and the "Holy Cow" sandwich both come up again and again, along with the Chicken, Bacon and Avocado wrap and homemade flapjacks. Open Monday to Saturday from 8am.
Between Bread, Padgate Railway Station.
A sandwich shop that opened this year on the site of the old fish and chip shop, right on the station platform. The menu is split into Classics, Cold Between, Hot Between and salad bowls for anyone skipping the bread altogether, all made fresh rather than pre-packed. Open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 2:30pm, genuinely handy if you're catching a train.
Porters Coffee Co, Marsh House Lane, Padgate.
Not a sandwich shop exactly, but the New York-style bagels earn their place on this list. Run by Lauren, who brought the idea back after years in Australia, the whole approach is doing a few things properly rather than a big menu, coffee, matcha, bagels and homemade bakes. Friday-Sunday hours only, and they close when they sell out, which tells you most of what you need to know.
